Alice Coleman started this petition to UK Parliament and

Many of the amazing zoos we have in the UK have an incredibly important role in wildlife conservation, and each of them rely on the public for funding to look after these precious animals. Chester zoo, a very well known zoo and recognised for its fantastic role in animal conservation (see https://www.chesterzoo.org/what-we-do/ ), is facing a £24m debt by the end of 2020 due to the covid-19 outbreak. This is something that cannot happen without financially crippling the zoo, and resulting in their permanent closure. What happens to all the animals then?

Whether you agree with having animals in captivity or not, we must all take action to ensure the safety and welfare of the animals that are currently within these zoos. We must not fail those individuals.

It is feasible to ensure social distancing within zoos. Many zoos have many acres of space and 10s of kilometres of walkways. If the public can crowd on the beaches and travel to exercise, then why cannot we enjoy the exercise around these zoos, educating children, providing the zoos with the adequate income and maintaining the conservation these zoos have done for decades? With social distancing measures in place, hand washing facilities readily available, limited seating within a small area (ensuring space), and limited tickets sold for specific time entries- then surely this is feasible for the UK government to do in the near future?

If the UK zoos open up again, conservation can continue, as these zoos will have the funding from the public they have always relied on. Children who are not in school and even adults can continue to be educated on the world around them, this being more important in this day and age than ever before. We cannot stand by and let this happen.

These animals should not have to suffer because the opening up of fast food restaurants like McDonalds and KFC is higher up on the priority list than the opening of British zoos that have not only national, but global importance in the world of conservation.

Thank you for taking your time to read this petition and I hope I have persuaded you to take action. From one animal lover to another, we must do our best to help animals whenever we can.
