It is clear that many people are losing jobs and many companies are making redundancies during this pandemic. However with no companies really hiring at the moment it is leaving the people who are made redundant at a stand still, with no money coming in- yet bills coming out. Redundancy pay is only available to those who have given 2 or more years or service to the company, which in normal situations would be understandable but in a climate where there are no jobs and no possibility of another income this rule should be relaxed and extended to all made redundant. The country is in a economic struggle yes, due to Covid 19 it has affected the heart of most businesses, and now we have hit August where companies will have to start paying a percentage to keep staff on furlough- this is when they are making the redundancies. Where does this leave people? Applying for universal credit, which will not cover their bills but help pay for their rent and pay that’s about all, the more people in universal credit the more tax payers will end up paying in the long run. If these employees that are getting made redundant were able to stay in the company what’s to say that they wouldn’t have given the company 5-8 years of outstanding service. It’s simply not fair with the current situation to give a weeks notice and no alternative method of income. Redundancy pay should be for all during this pandemic!
