Shielding Support Must Not Be Axed

Shielding Support Must Not Be Axed

From 1 August, the Government has announced it will end its support for the 2.2 million "extremely vulnerable" people who have been shielded during the pandemic. Government provided food boxes and medicine deliveries will end and local authorities will no longer be required to provide supplementary help such as phone contacts and special dietary support. Statutory sick pay will no longer be available for shielders who are in employment.

Shielders will therefore be forced out into an unsafe environment where millions are flouting the social distancing rules, mask-wearing is a rarity in shops and confined spaces, and the risks of local outbreaks and a significant second wave of Coronavirus are ever-present. Silver Voices believes that shielders should have the options not to return to work, and not to be forced to go to shops for food and medical essentials, if they feel the risks to their physical and mental health are too great. The UK Governments are urged to continue existing shielding arrangements, at least until the end of the year, for all those on the shielding list who opt to continue to receive help.
