Unless Putin is stopped in Ukraine, many thousands more civilians will die in attacks from Russian bombs. Putin’s record shows he has no regard for human rights, just as he has no regard for international borders. There is the real, live possibility that he will go on to threaten the Baltic states as well as Finland. We face a choice now. We can watch him destroy a country from the air, as we watched Hitler, Mussolini and Franco destroy the Spanish Republic in the 1930s (picture). Or we can act to stop the onward march of a tyrannical madman through allied European countries. This risks an escalation, yes, but history should warn us of the failure of appeasement.
