Stop UK State Visit of President Trump

Following President Trump's abominable response to the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville over the weekend of 12th August, I've created this petition to ask the UK government to reconsider their previous stance on his state visit planned later this year.

Trump's response to the events over the weekend, which saw one woman killed and 19 others injured in a horrific "hit and run" incident, has demonstrated that he sympathises with white supremacists, neo-nazis and the alt-right:

- A lack of condemnation over the actions taken by the alt-right protestors, who were shown in a documentary to be highly organised with violent intentions, armed with shields, helmets, guns and knives. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIrcB1sAN8I

- The "many sides" speech, delivered only after prompting by senior White House aides, four days after complete silence (http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/trump-says-two-sides-share-blame-charlottesville-rally-violence-n793001

- A complete failure to acknowledge Heather Heyer for two whole days after she lost her life at the rally. To date, Trump has not offered condolences to her family either. (http://www.refinery29.uk/2017/08/168058/trump-condemns-white-nationalism-charlottesville-too-late

- Endorsement of Trump's "response" by David Duke, ex-leader of the Ku Klux Klan (https://twitter.com/DrDavidDuke/status/897559892164304896

During WWII, Britain fought as part of the Allied Forces against Nazi Germany. We fought to rid Europe of this racist, anti-semitic evil - and succeeded. As a result of this history, and due to sheer human decency, it is unthinkable that we as a nation should extend our arms and welcome President Trump, who is morally bankrupt and sympathises with white supremacists.

Previous petitions were addressed to the last UK government, which was dissolved for the General Election held on 8th June 2017. In light of recent events, we think this deserves a second consideration. We petition our Queen, our Prime Minister, and our new government, to reconsider past decisions and revoke the invitation of a State Visit to President Trump.

A failure to revoke the invitation and therefore stop President Trump from visiting the UK can only be seen as our government's endorsement of this man's personal - and official - views. Let's show Trump and our government that we do not agree with him, that we will stand up to bullies and evil and he is not welcome in the UK.
