Kim Robertson started this petition to UK Government and

I was housed via mutual exchange by Southampton City Council into a house that was too small. The house is too small as per the Housing Act 1985. The space standard law which uses bedroom sizes to determine who can legally occupy these rooms. They are called units. Then each person in a household is either half a unit or a whole unit depending on age. You can then use this information to determine whether you're overcrowded in your property and if you were overcrowded at the time of signing your tenancy agreement. Southampton City Council are breaking the law by telling residents and tenants within the city that their homes they occupy are of correct size for that particular family and signing people up on unlawful tenancies. Are you one of these tenants? Have you signed a tenancy agreement unlawfully without knowing? Have you been refused to join a housing register because the council have told you you're adequately housed when you are not? When I've complained and argued these issues the council have ignored me. I want everyone who feels that this isn't morally right to help me take this further. They are breaking the law. It is a criminal offence for a landlord to allow overcrowding in their properties. Why is Southampton City Council allowed to get away with this? Someone needs to stand up and answer us all. This affects not only me personally but I'm aware of it being a much wider issue. Please sign this petition and help if you can. I will add that this isn't about being allocated a social housing property and then having additional children and wanting a bigger property. This is about being refused to join a register when you actually need to. This is about being housed into a property that's too small when the council know exactly how many people will be residing in that particular property yet they still let you live there. This is time for change, I also feel a change in the social housing sector, tenancies needs to happen and fast. The city doesn't have space to build new houses. If you have a house that's too small, please take the time to think about the families that will benefit from living there if you were to move onto a smaller property. Take the time to look back at your memories with your children playing in a garden not stuck in a tower block. We need councils to seriously look at tenants that are under occupying their homes and to provide a scheme that will encourage them to move to a smaller property. Thanks for your time in reading this.
