In 1948, Myanmar (formerly Burma) was freed from the British empire and left under the rule of the military. This started a 50 year dictatorship. In 1990, the first democratic election was held, and won by the NLD, along with prominent political figure and nobel peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. In 1991, Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest by the military until her release in 2010.

This allowed for a democratic society in Myanmar, with which they enjoyed 10 years of freedom and rapid development. An election was held in November 2020, and the NLD won with over an 80% majority.

On the morning of the 1st February 2021, Suu Kyi along with other members of the NLD were arrested after rumours of a possible coup were denied by the military. Military troops and tanks have been deployed to major cities, and TV, phone lines and the interner have been cut off.

Something must be done to save Myanmar.
