UK Government: Put relationships at the heart of the NHS

Five years ago the unthinkable happened. My wonderful 18 year old daughter, Sarah, was at school when she had a stroke. It was a life-changing experience. My independent daughter, who was about to go to university, was left unable to communicate.
From that day everything changed. My husband has been amazing, but it really affected all of our relationships. Speech therapy and medical support was available for Sarah, but there was nothing when it came to our family.
I’m campaigning with Relate to show that relationships are critical to the nation's health and wellbeing. The evidence shows that good quality relationships can prevent, delay or reduce the effects of physical and mental health conditions, as well as being a vital part of making every day better. Yet when we need our relationships most, the effects of a health condition can pile on the pressure.
Our relationships are often overlooked or ignored in the NHS. Excellent support is out there, but too few people get access to it. My family certainly didn’t.
That needs to change. I’m calling on the Government to put relationships at the heart of the NHS. I want to see a Minister in the new Government who has relationships and quality of life for carers and people with health conditions built into their job, and for them to run an inquiry into how a focus on relationships can be built in throughout the health system.
Sarah is now 24 and her condition has improved, but we still have a long journey ahead. I don’t want anyone else’s family to go through what we did without support.
