Live.me is a huge live streaming website. Last year it banked 60 million dollars of investment, 50 million of those from Chinese App Developer Cheetah Mobile. Live streaming sites have long presented a huge problem for children and parents re online sexual abuse. They can offer those who would prey on children an unprecedented level of access to individual kids. On Live.me anyone watching you can send you gifts and emojis, if you ‘earn’ or ‘attract’ enough of these gifts you can cash them into a paypal account.

At its root child sexual exploitation is simple. It is defined in law as where a person, of any age, takes advantage of a power imbalance to force or entice a child to engage in sexual activity in return for something being received by the child or those perpetrating or facilitating the abuse.

By its very nature the site establishes the mechanics for child grooming - offering the promise of financial reward to children in return for whatever they do on their feed - and we have seen the results first hand. The power imbalance is overt. The children do not have money or power, the viewers do. Very young children, attracting tens of thousands of followers, reading out comments from the screen like ‘follow me please beautiful, give me a kiss’, not realizing that this in itself is not behaviour they should be exposed to online before recoiling from the screen when individuals have sent shocking messages in response. Young teenagers taking ‘orders’ for sexual acts on their feeds, abused and exploited while appearing in control, even though they never are. The only ‘protection’ for any of these children is the tiny warning on the top right of the screen that the site does not tolerate sexual abuse which is ignored mercilessly.

Please help us to protect children worldwide and wake up to this. We wouldn’t tolerate children being abused like this in a school, or in a youth group, or a café. Why are we tolerating it online? The UK government is considering regulation for apps but what impact will a fining regulator have in this instance and how many years will that take. What can be done now to protect the children currently on the site? Please help us to ask the government to act now before more children are harmed.
