The current English and Welsh school summer holidays begin towards the end of the British summer (approximately July 24th). This has a number of negative impacts on families and education. Students spend the hottest part of the year in the classroom, where temperatures and the presence of abundant pollen make learning awkward for most school pupils.

Next, students and families miss out on the best weather conditions and longest daylengths in the year and consequently do not gain the maximum advantage from being able to relax and make use of the longest day lengths outside of school time.

Finally, from a practical point of view, educationally, July is a time where examinations are completed and teaching is more filling than functional. Most students do not retain learning from one academic year to another. Moreover, Year 11 and 13 students have left several weeks earlier, leaving schools relatively empty and less effective.

Scotland has summer holidays that maximise the benefits of long daylength and higher temperatures, beginning at the end of June. The traditional English and Welsh holiday is an anachronism based on agricultural practice. It's time to change.
