Current legislation does not require drivers of Passenger Carrying Vehicles to wear seatbelts. Nor are such vehicles required to have seatbelts fitted to the driver’s seat. The reasoning behind this is an archaic notion that bus drivers need the freedom to move around in order to collect fares and issue tickets. This outdated and dangerous thinking means that thousands of bus drivers in the UK are every day put at risk of serious injury or death on our roads. Indeed, a number of drivers have been killed in recent years where they have been thrown through the windscreen, the risk of which would be greatly reduced had a seatbelt been fitted and worn. We the undersigned request that the Department for Transport, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Authority, and the Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps MP, make it a legal requirement for seatbelts to be fitted and worn on the driver’s seat of all Passenger Carrying Vehicles in the United Kingdom.
