It's time for politics to fast-forward to the present and have online voting introduced.

In the UK, 38 million people are on Facebook, 15 million are on Twitter, and 4.5 million use online dating sites.

According to the Office for National Statistics, 74% of adults in the UK shop online, 55% read the news online, and 53% are banking online.

Meanwhile, compared with 1945-1997, the voter turnout in this country has dropped by 14.3 percentage points.  Turnout amongst 18-24 year olds has been the lowest of all age groups in the last three elections.  (2001 – 39%; 2005 – 37%; 2010 – 44%).

It's time that we had a 21st century voting system fit for the digital age we all live in.

Our recent report entitled 'Viral Voting' estimated that online voting could increase the youth voter turnout to 70% with an additional 1.8 million voters compared to 2010.

However, the benefits of online voting aren't limited to voter turnout.  Our report found that it could:

  • Reduce the cost-per-vote by a third from £3.78 to £2.59.
  • Reduce the cost of General Elections in the long-term by £12.8 million.
  • Reduce the number of accidentally spoilt ballots.
  • Allow vision-impaired voters cast a secret ballot for the first ever time.
  • Increase the accessibility of voting for those with other disabilities.
  • Better inform the electorate about each election.
  • Future-proof elections in an increasingly digital age.

Do you think it's time the Government modernised elections?
