Derek Smith started this petition to UK Government

Job Seeker’s  Allowance (JSA) was frozen from 2016 to 2020. It is now only £58.90 pw for a person under 24 and £58.40  each for couples (over 25).  Even then people are often ‘sanctioned’ and left with nothing.

These rates are so low in order to punish people for not finding work, yet many people are made redundant through no fault of their own. An already difficult situation is made worse.  People face being unable to heat their homes,  eat three basic meals a day or buy new clothing. Some will turn to crime and become imprisoned.

Many will develop mental health problems and become unable to return to the labour market. Tragically, some, especially young men, will take their own lives.
At a period when people most need the support of the state, they are left abandoned and destitute. As a society we should be measured by how we support those in need not by how we punish them!

Those in government making these rules are wealthy. They and their families will never need to rely on JSA and  feel no guilt for impoverishing millions of hard working people.

This petition calls on the UK Government to raise all JSA by 10% and to double the rate for the first 16 weeks of unemployment.  It’s not much but it is a start.
