Dear All

Please could I share with you a recent experience in relation to our sons severe nut allergy. We feel by standardising all orders are taken and processed could stop life threatening mistakes.

Many restaurants now have booklets explaining all ingredients etc but there still is a long way to go but human error, lack of process and awareness is a major contributory factor to incidents which can result in death.

Harry is 14 years of age, he also has severe dyslexia and which affects his ability to read. Harry is unable to read properly although he has comprehension his ability in certain situations is compromised as a result Therefore as his parents we oversee what is ordered etc.

We were at a restaurant on Sunday 12th of May, there where 6 in our party. This was a restaurant that we have been many times before, which is independent. We always go through the same process of discussions with waiters etc etc have 2 Epi pens on the table as a constant visual reminder.

However despite this the order taken for Harry’s dessert was not correctly requested by an experienced waiter and he was given a large Sundae which he has had numerous times before but was covered in nuts.

It was only the quick reaction from my friend who was sat next to Harry that saved him from this situation, he had already taken a bit of brownie out to eat and fortunately stopped, undoubtably saving his life.

Anger isn’t what you feel it’s the overwhelming fright of the near miss of the situation. The devastation that this would have had potentially.

Obviously apologies etc etc were given and it transpires this occurred due to misinterpretation of the order.  This however can not take away the enormity of the emotions you feel.

Overnight I couldn’t settle just trying to think of over ways we can try to stop human errors within the restaurant environment to save lives of nut allergy sufferers.

I contacted the restaurant the next morning with a suggestion that they are going to take on board immediately.

When orders are taken they are often made on white pads/receipts etc this shows no difference to other orders/checks received by kitchens.

I feel all orders taken in both chains or independent restaurants cafes etc etc should be taken on Red pads, showing danger ensuring all staff are aware of a risk involved. A possible red flag system. Also with the digital systems in place there also should be a way that this can also be mirrored.

Also in all allergy sufferers that the manager or who is in charge should take full responsibility for the order, the pathway through the kitchen and delivery to the customer. No matter how large or small a cafe/restaurant this is possible.

If this dessert had been brought out by the manager who took the order the dessert would never have been presented to our son or red flagged. This simple error could have cost our son his life.

I really feel this is worthy of making a system to put in place across our countries establishments to protect allergies sufferers.

I would really appreciate you sharing and to try and ensure that this is made part of the regulations & training and licensing for all food establishments.

Kind Regards

Michelle & Paul Ibbetson
