Stephanie Mitchell started this petition to UK Government

So they've cancelled the bank holiday on Monday May 4th 2020 and moved it to Friday May 8th to cover the 75th anniversary of VE day.

If Gregg Clarke wants to "ensure as many people as possible have the opportunity to remember and honour our heroes of the Second World War" then would it not have been a more fitting gesture to give the people of the UK an extra bank holiday?

British citizens have already made plans for the May Day weekend which include holidays, charity events and weddings. Had this change been announced sooner then perhaps I wouldn't feel so strongly about it now, however I don't believe it's right that this has happened with such short notice.

England and Wales have only 8 Bank Holidays a year, and I read an article recently that reported only Mexico had less with 7 days. People of the UK would be grateful for an additional bank holiday, especially if it was given to allow us to celebrate something as important the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

VE day should be remembered properly but not at the expense of an already existing bank holiday celebrating International Workers day. If remembering VE Day truly means that much to this country we should honour it with its own public holiday.

Please give us back the May Day bank holiday!
