DETERMINED NOT DISABLED

DETERMINED NOT DISABLED
Disabled, special needs, spastic, cripple, retard, handicapped ... NO...DETERMINED!
In the UAE Disabled people are referred to as “People of Determination” which I believe to be a more accurate description.
People suffer in many different ways, face criticism and questions to prove their hidden disabilities. Having to explain isn’t something any of us should have to do especially when parking in a ‘Disabled’ bay,
When explaining you are ‘disabled’ often the response can be negative with pity such as ‘I am sorry’ but when saying ‘I am a person of determination’ it makes you feel empowered and proud and doesn’t invite pity responses!
Please can you help support me with my drive to be able to address the label of people being disabled to reflect what they do in the UAE, which is people of determination.
I am a 40 year old lady who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at 29. I was a primary school teacher of 15 years at the same school and was completely determined to continue in my career. Unfortunately my illness stopped me continuing with my love of teaching however I was determined to continue working and have continued to be successful in my life.
After visiting Dubai several times I was so proud to explain whilst I was visiting and needed assistance that I was a person of determination rather than that I was disabled. These experiences has made me feel determined to see if you could help me with hoping to make the change in the UK and worldwide.
