Open up the Help to Buy ISA scheme to people who have previously owned property.

These are my children in 2012 on the doorstep of the house that I jointly owned with my ex-husband in Leicester just months before we had to leave. It was a lovely family home and it was ours. When we divorced the house had to be sold as I couldn't earn enough to pay my share of the mortgage and when it was sold there was not enough equity in the house to buy a new one. Five years later we are still renting and really would like to own our own home again.
I am now in a position where I might be able to apply for a shared ownership property. One big thing that would really help us to save for a deposit is the help to buy scheme offered by the government. But when I tried to apply I discovered that I was not eligible. Currently if you have previously owned a property at any time in your life you are not eligible for the Help to Buy ISA scheme whereby the government will boost your savings by 25%. This means that people who have lost their homes (often single parent families) are not offered the same support as first time buyers which seems at best arbitrary and at worst punitive for anyone who has suffered hardship and lost a home through divorce or separation, illness, job loss or redundancy. Please sign this petition and give those people who have suffered the loss of their home the same help from the government as those who are buying for the first time.
At 10,000 signatures we will receive a response from government. At 100,000 signatures the government must consider this for debate in parliament.
