STEPHEN TAYLOR started this petition to UK Government and Chief Medical Officer

Today we are being told to wash our hands to minimise the chance that we will bring the coronavirus into our mouths or eyes. This is not 100% safe and the experience of the last 20 years with SARS, MERS and others, plus Italy's exponential rise in cases proves that this doesn't work well for coronavirus.

The best way for the uninfected members of all of our families plus friends and colleagues to stay clear of the virus is to minimise the spread from people who already have it. The government cannot test us all quickly enough so we have to look at ways to control the spread. Taiwan shows us how to do that and the Observer and Telegraph have both run articles supporting this. You can also visit the Taiwan CDC page to see that their daily cases seem to have slowed down at about 45, while ours are over 200 and if we follow Italy, we will be at 2,000 by next weekend.

Taiwan recommends that people coughing and sneezing wear masks and anyone on public transport or in large gatherings and buildings wear masks. It is only by getting everyone to wear a mask that we can be sure the infected people wear one (many don't know they've got it).

Before requiring masks to be worn, the government needs to ensure that we have enough masks and we can all get access to them. This needs to happen very quickly. We have to start wearing masks if we want to preserve freedom of movement - it may already be too late, but I hope not. Please support this and write to your MP and other experts to get them to look at Taiwan and follow their example. Thanks.
