Bev Bookless started this petition to UK Government and

COVID-19 has rightly brought about measures to ensure we keep people safe and not to overburden our precious NHS. However, childcare can only be provided during restrictions on socialising by registered childminders and nurseries. Many other people, aunts, uncles, brothers,  sisters, friends and grandparents provide childcare on a voluntary basis every day. Now known as informal childcare.

Without informal childcare there is the potential of major impact upon children’s school attendance, parents not able to work, widening of deprivation, both financially and emotionally, economic downturn. I believe it is important we maintain a stable environment for all children to be able to be educated, nurtured and supported especially during these turbulent, uncertain times.

The local authorities in the North East asked for informal childcare to be considered during the Covid-19 restrictions. However, this has been denied by Secretary of State for Health citing that it is often grandparents who provide this care and therefore at more risk of Covid-19. Let grandparents make their own decision based upon their own personal circumstances and risk. Not all grandparents are at higher risk.
