UK citizens: Say No to Shops Selling Gene Edited Food
Why this petition matters
Over the past few years big tech and billionaires have played an ever increasing part in our lives. Now they are interested in the food we eat.
The UK government is planning to allow gene-edited crops to be grown and sold-unlabelled- in shops across England.
It has recently introduced a Genetic Technology Bill to Parliament which allows the genetic editing of plants, and will also allow for similar changes for livestock gene-editing to follow.
The Environment Secretary George Eustice said the change in the law was necessary to combat the impact of climate change.
Gene Editing alters the DNA of an organism and has, until now, been tightly restricted under EU law, with the European Court of Justice ruling that gene editing is a form of genetic modification. The judges argued that “the new techniques make it possible to produce genetically modified varieties at a rate out of all proportion to those resulting from the application of conventional methods of mutagenesis”
Last year, Joanna Lewis, Soil Association director of policy and strategy told ITV “Changing the DNA of crops and animals to make them temporarily immune to disease is not a long-term solution; we should be investing in solutions that deal with the cause of disease and pests in the first place, including a lack of crop diversity, the decline in beneficial insects, and animal overcrowding.
We need to let it be known that Gene Edited food is not welcome in England, and unlabelled Gene Edited products should have no place in any shop in the country.
