Why this petition matters

Started by Kathryn Hafner

The Counseling Center on campus is a resource that provides students with counseling and wellbeing services through outreach programs, self-help brochures and limited therapy sessions. Although the Counseling Center does offer services to students, there are flaws in their services that do not meet student needs adequately. We believe that changes must happen to offer adequate mental health services to students on campus.

By signing this petition, you are agreeing that the administration needs to be held accountable for the services that they are providing to students. Students have to call the Counseling Center the day they want to meet with a counselor and are not able to schedule a meeting ahead. This can be extremely stressful for students who need to meet with a counselor immediately, but are unable to do so if there are no appointments available on a particular day. The Counseling Center only offers a limited amount of individual appointments. This can be problematic for students who do not feel comfortable in group counseling or are unable to go to private therapy due to price, insurance or transportation.

If the administration and university as a whole is going to continue to advertise and support the Counseling Center along with McKinley Mental Health resources, students should be able to utilize them without waiting upwards to two months for basic screening services. In conclusion, to create a society where mental health stays a part of the conversation, we need to not neglect those that are being served and provide them with the proper tools to overcome every issue they bring forth. A world where mental health matters and is put on the top of the priority list is a world we are aiming to create.
