UIC Campus Housing Residents Demand Safety and Transparency

UIC Campus Housing Residents Demand Safety and Transparency
Why this petition matters
On September 10 an intruder entered Marie Robinson Hall after following a resident into the building. Once inside the building, the intruder was threatening the people in the lobby of MRH with a gun. Once the police had arrived at the scene, they concluded that he did not have a gun, but that he had multiple knives. UICPD has NOT made a public safety advisory regarding this situation and does not intend to. Students had to find out about this situation from peers.
Current lockdown protocols do not involve immediately letting residents know via public safety advisories that there is an intruder on campus. They currently ask that desk workers and RA’s notify in their group chats. This is not feasible and is unsafe.
As we approach the three year anniversary of the death of Ruth George, a UIC student who was murdered on campus, the students of MRH are shocked and appalled that there are not harsher safety protocols in place.
We demand transparency regarding this situation. We demand that desk workers have panic buttons to be able to call the police discreetly and safely in the face of danger. We demand that RAs and desk workers have the capability of making public safety advisories
