The opiate and heroin epidemic is the most severe public health crisis facing America at this time. This statement is made with all do respect to the families and friends whose loved ones are suffering from some other desperate health condition. Nassau and Suffolk Counties have experienced the highest overdose rates in all of NYS, and some of the highest in the country. Much is being done to stem the tide, including history being made today with the opening of LI’s first Recovery Center in Hauppauge THRIVE Recovery Community Outreach Center. While this is a tremendous milestone for the recovery community, there remains so much more to be done to increase the availability of recovery support and treatment here on Long Island. It is for this reason that we are calling upon United Healthcare to play a vital role. It is with an abundance of urgency, that we request UHC to recognize the need to open its behavioral health panels, to private practitioners, in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The need has never been greater for private practice clinicians to be able to join the UHC network. On a daily basis, out of network professionals field calls from desperate families looking for a UHC provider. All too consistently we hear statements like “we cannot find someone who is taking new clients; we are not getting return phone calls; we need help now!” In reality, the consequences of addiction affect so many people in the lives of the person who is afflicted. All of these individuals would benefit greatly from professional mental health/addiction recovery services. However, the availability of private practice resources is entirely too limited. In conclusion, the importance of this request cannot be emphasized enough. In the balance rests the lives and well-being of so many people who are insured by your organization.  Please take this time to wholeheartedly consider all of the aforementioned information, all for all the reasons discussed, we ask that you meet our request; the time is NOW and UHC can make a difference..
