Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death in the world, killing up to half of the people who use it. Every 6.5 seconds someone dies from tobacco use. Tobacco is expected to cause approx. 10 million deaths per year by 2030; 70% of these in developing countries (WHO, 2011).
The 2006 Uganda Demographic Health Survey indicated that cigarette smoking prevalence amongst adults was 23% for males and 4% for females.
Tobacco was responsible for 2% of all non-communicable diseases in Uganda (WHO, 2012).
Data from Mulago Hospital showed that 75% of the patients of oral cancer had a history of smoking from 2-38 years.
