Free Parking For Employees

Free Parking For Employees
Why this petition matters
UGA student employees at the Ramsey Student Center are petitioning for free parking at a lot or deck near Ramsey. Many of us work during times that the buses do not run, and we have to resort to using our paycheck to park at the Ramsey Deck. The employees at Ramsey Student Center seek employment to pay to attend the University we work for, in addition to other additional living costs. When we have to pay to park, we are required to use nearly half of what we make per shift to park. The fee to park is $3.30 an hour without the ability to pay in half hour increments over long periods of time. Our shifts range anywhere from 2-3.5 hours, resulting in employees paying for unused, additional parking time up to half an hour. When preciously contacting UGA Parking Services to seek some sort of parking pass, the excuse given to us was that every student worker would need to be provided a pass. We have been made aware that the Health Center employees are provided with codes to enter into the kiosks in the deck that allow them to park during the days they work without paying; invalidating that excuse. Since we are vital to keeping Ramsey Student Center open, we feel it would be fair that UGA Parking Services and/or UGA SGA provide the employees of Ramsey with a way of parking at our place of employment without using the funds we earned while at work. Whether we be provided a pass that is active during our assigned shifts, or provided a code that we can use in the deck during our shifts; we are tired of having to pay to come into work and do not feel it is irrational of us to request free parking when it corresponds with the times we work.
