Absolutely outrageous. "The University of East London (UEL) is the careers-led university. Our mission is to prepare you for the jobs of the future." you cannot claim this and fire your long term-dedicated staff. Admit you made a mistake.

There is no financial need the staff affected are valuable well respected academics and I believe the outcome will be damaging to staff and university
