The Corona virus has stopped European football in its tracks. It has also forced many of us to pause and reflect on the kind of football competitions UEFA have.

The current "Champions" League is a farce. Genuine champions of many European nations are forced to play off against each other. Some who are knocked out have no European football whatsoever that season. Others who finished 3rd or 4th in their national leagues waltz into the "Champions League" group stages. The 2019 Champions League final was contested by two clubs from the same country, neither of whom were its champions. This now bloated, often dull format ensures the richest clubs from the richest leagues can cherry pick the best players, restricting competition. This filters down to domestic leagues as the same clubs dominate due to their almost guaranteed Champions League income and profile.

UEFA to have a Champions League for Champions only. A two leg, home and away format encouraging inclusion and excitement from the beginning. This should only be the start of more equitable and competitive European and domestic football. Fans of all European football teams should lobby UEFA and their domestic associations to make this decision in the interests of fair play and sporting integrity.
