Add more student parking spaces in the Pangea Parking Lot.
Why this petition matters
Parking has always been difficult at UCSD, but in all honesty, the school is not doing enough. The Pangea parking structure, essential for the 2000 odd students living in the Village and International housing complexes, is consistently full. UCSD raises parking rate passes by five percent last year, a change they justified by pointing out the 1,600 new parking places they created. But with UCSD growing by almost 2,500 students every year, it just isn't enough. No student should have to spend over half an hour driving to various parking locations in the middle of the night, just to walk back to their dorms, at least not while paying an extra 240 dollars per quarter.
However, for Pangea, there is a laughable obvious solution to many people's problems. Please change at least one, ideally two of the "B" parking spot floors to student spaces. I have never, in all of my time at this school, seen those floors more than a quarter full. Those spots are meant for faculty and graduate students, but with a few minor exceptions, there are closer spots to every place they would need to go.
Let me be clear. The state of parking at UCSD is unacceptable. You cannot continue to expand our campus without also expanding student facilities. It's no coincidence that parking services regularly scores below average on satisfaction polls. This is a solvable problem, and the UC's approach so far is near criminal.
This needs to be fixed.
