Maggie Alves started this petition to UCSB students

It’s no surprise that every UCSB student develops a strong attachment to the community of Isla Vista. Its tight-knit community, vivacious energy, and proximity to the beach make it a dream for any college student. However, as in many college towns across the nation, housing is a major concern for UCSB students. Affordable housing in IV has long been an issue. Even with finances aside, finding housing is a yearly struggle. Steady rent increase is not foreign to Isla Vista, but now rent has surpassed what many students are able to afford, even with taking out loans. This past year witnessed an unprecedented increase in rent, with some properties increasing by nearly $3,000. Most students pay close to $1,000 a month to live in a small house with 10-15 others, typically sharing a room with two or three friends.

Since IV is a small community and there are few housing options, students have no choice but to come up with the money. This puts a strain on students funding their own education, as they have to take out more loans or dedicate more time to working than studying. To make matters worse, since students are desperate for housing and leases are short, landlords put little effort into maintaining their properties. Very few houses in Isla Vista have been recently renovated; appliances are broken, utilities are poor, and it’s not uncommon to hear about termite and ant infestations. Pricing is continually increasing without adequate improvements to the structures.

Students should not be forced out of Isla Vista due to skyrocketing prices. While in school, students should be able to focus on studies without the overwhelming pressure to work to pay rent. Letting rent continue to increase will do nothing but hurt students in the future. Students will continue to be pushed out of IV. I propose a rent cap where each student should not have to pay more than $850 a month if they are sharing a room with 1+ roommates.

If UCSB and the IV community fight for rent control, we can ensure that IV is a reliable (and realistic) place for Gauchos to call home. Please sign this petition to ensure that those who call Isla Vista home can continue to afford it.
