Cecilia Yan started this petition to UCSB and

UCSB parking spaces for students are always limited. Students who live off-campus were only allowed to park in two to three parking lots during the day time. Therefore, the spaces are already in shortage compared to faculty and staff parking. Many students who live off-campus have complained about not being able to find a parking space and late to their classes.

Recently, UCSB enlarges the student population by recruiting more students in recent two years. Among the new students, international students who tend to live off-campus also increased in proportion. The shortage of parking became even severe. Since the on-campus parking structure 18 and 22 are the most closed parking lots for many classrooms, the parking spaces ran out very quickly. Rather than accommodate the spaces in-campus, TPS suggests students park on an off-campus parking lot and walk to campus while some parking structures that reserve for faculty and staff are empty for use. Thus, many students are forced to consider other ways of transportation to school, which can potentially cause students to lose the motivation to go to class due to inconvenient.

Besides the parking space issues, the issues of limited permits also need concerns. TPS started to limit the number of student permits. As a result, some students who weren’t able to get permits have to purchase temporary permits. Once the temporary expired, they would be charged for tickets around $48 to $88, which is a high cost for students.

I, as a result of the situation now, suggest UCSB and TPS consider constructing other parking structures on campus; or open up some parking space reserved for faculty. If the school believes they can handle a large number of students in school, they should be consistent with the student services we deserved.
