Medical Spanish Interest Group UCLA started this petition to DGSOM

Dear students and faculty members of David Geffen School at UCLA

We are starting a petition to gauge interest in a medical Spanish selective at DGSOM. Despite having a large Spanish-speaking population and a commitment to diversity, DGSOM does not offer any formal training for learning medical Spanish. Currently, opportunities to speak Spanish are limited to the events hosted by the Medical Spanish Interest Group, and although we have made great effort to provide frequent and informative sessions, without the resources of the medical school as an institution, we have found we have not made the progress we would hope in helping current students learn Spanish.

The Medical Spanish Interest Group believes that the best way to help current students expand on their Spanish knowledge would be to create a selective. With more frequent meetings and the opportunity to provide institutional credit, we believe far more students would be willing to make room in their demanding academic schedules to learn a new language.

Finally, by signing this petition, we believe that you personally will be helping to acknowledge a need for more training opportunities in the Spanish language. Regardless of where we all end up practicing, we will all likely come across Spanish-speaking patients, and we believe that it should be a priority for the school to provide opportunities to learn a language that so many of our patients speak. Overall, we believe this is a great opportunity to show our commitment to our community!

In summary, if you would be or would have been interested in learning Medical Spanish as a selective during your time at DGSOM, please sign this petition! We appreciate your support!
