Drew Fournier started this petition to UCLA Extension

As part of the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, students at UCLA Extension (and around the world) have experienced in-person classes being moved online. Every week teachers ask us to bear with them while we watch them try to figure out the online learning environment during class time. Class demonstrations and field trips have evaporated or been replaced with diminished quality substitutions.

While moving classes online is a necessary response to the pandemic, a comparison of class syllabi before and after the transition shows that the UCLA Extension is charging students the same price for a lesser quality education. Administrators and teachers openly admit the quality of teaching has suffered, yet ask students to shoulder the burden––at a time when many students are already struggling with unemployment or having to handle childcare full time.

To rub salt in the wound, Dean Eric Bullard and his administration decided to revoke access to a longstanding "early-bird" promotion (equivalent to 5% of course fees) beginning this summer. The early-bird promotion was a valuable tool many students habitually utilized to lower financial barriers to entry to UCLA Extension's educational product.

It has become clear that if the school is giving students less, students should be giving them less too. Anything else amounts to exploitation.

As organized students within UCLA Extension, we demand that Dean Eric Bullard take the following steps to reduce the now-enhanced economic burden being felt by students:

1. Reimburse all students enrolled in Summer 2020 classes 5% of their course fees (equivalent to the early-bird promotion).

2. Re-institute, starting Fall 2020, the early-bird promotion on the basis it was pre-COVID-19 (every quarter).

3. Reimburse all students enrolled in Summer 2020 classes 10% of their course fees.

4. Institute the 10% course fee reduction for all enrolled students throughout the entirety of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thank you for your support.
