Miranda Gutierrez started this petition to UCLA Admin and

Mental health access for students at UCLA is very restrictive. Students are only allocated a few visits per quarter to see licensed and qualified mental health professionals. We know that mental health issues require extended periods of care, and for the amount of stress placed on students at UCLA, there are insufficient resources. In terms of health inequities, low-income students, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and students with disabilities disproportionately suffer more from mental health issues. With rising mental health problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an increasing demand for more mental health services and this is especially prominent in these marginalized communities.

CAPS currently only provides three (four during COVID) free visits per quarter- an amount that is not enough to sustain proper mental health care for many individuals. Additionally, the burden of this is placed disproportionately on students with financial difficulties as those from higher SES brackets can afford outside mediums for therapists, group settings, medications, etc.

We would like to focus on this lack of access to mental health services for students on the UCLA campus. Ideally, we would like to begin the conversation about possibly donating one's unused CAPS appointments. Think of it as a CAPS version of Swipe Out Hunger. Many UCLA students don't even touch the three allotted appointments and would appreciate the opportunity to donate these to someone that could.
