UCSD STUDENTS NEED A SKATEPARK
UC San Diego needs a skatepark for students to have a place where they feel safe skating. Many students have received citations for trick skating around campus, even though you are allowed to ride your board, you can’t trick skate. Practicing a sport you love should not be criminalized. The Recreation Center has rails and boxes that they’ve stated they are willing to give to create a space to skate. Building a DIY skatepark is fairly easy, and with the right materials and assistance from community members, faculty, and workers with knowledge we could easily set up a skatepark. This could include rails, boxes, curbs, a bowl/mini ramp, banks and flat ground to skate on. Skaters at UCSD need a place to feel safe practicing their sport. Skating should be treated like the other official sports at the university.
