Recently, UC Davis students received notice that Spring Quarter 2020 instruction was to be moved online due to the developing COVID-19 public health emergency. We applaud the steps taken by leadership to protect students and surrounding communities.

The UC Davis community is making a tremendous effort to adapt to these rapidly changing circumstances. Faculty, staff, and students have all been affected by recent events. We are greatly appreciative of strength the community has shown in these difficult times.

I turn attention to the tuition and fee breakdown for UC Davis students. In addition to University of California Tuition, UC Davis Campus-based fees total $3,053.26. From the breakdown, here are the 4 main fee sources.

On 3/16, the school announced that Campus Recreation programs are closed for the foreseeable future. Campus Recreation includes the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC), Aquatics, UC Davis Marching Band, Craft Center, Sports Club, and Outdoor Adventures, and more. These wonderful programs are a source of joy for many UC Davis. They provide us with a way to stay physically fit and mentally healthy. It is unfortunate, but understandable, that facilities would have to close to minimize in-person interactions and contact within our community.

Looking at the fee structure (taken from https://www.ucdavis.edu/admissions/cost/ I urge you to take a look, it’s important to know how money is being used), 3 of the 4 major fee sources include Campus Recreation, or an associated facility or service.

We are asking for a reassessment of fees for Spring Quarter in light of this new information regarding Campus Recreation closure. With the closure, where do these portions of our Spring Quarter fees go? Will Spring Quarter fees be assessed to account for the closure of facilities that were the intended recipient of fees? We ask for transparency going forward.

Thank you to Chancellor Gary May and his leadership team for considering this request.
