The UC Board of Regents is taking up a discussion item to discuss the implementation of a five-year plan to increase systemwide fees on an annual basis at all nine campuses with undergraduate students. This includes an increase to resident tuition, student services fee, and non-resident supplemental tuition. The cohort model will increase tuition for every new incoming freshman class. By 2026-2027, tuition for all incoming freshman will increase by 22%.

For California residents, tuition will be $15,365, an increase of $2,795. For non-residents, tuition will be $51,736, an increase of $6,616.

Below are FIVE reasons the UC should not establish a #ForeverHike:

  1. Tuition Increases DO NOT positively impact low-income students
  2. It's not equitable: Non-Resident students will bear the brunt of tuition increases with minimal support
  3. Creates inequity in campus funding
  4. Limited Access: UC Residence Policy prohibits many immigrants and students with strong California ties to be categorized as nonresidents and pay exorbitant tuition and fee levels
  5. A better route to fund the UC is to double the Federal Pell Grant. Doubling the Pell Grant and expanding eligibility would produce about twice as much aid as the Cohort Tuition plan would generate in the proposed five year period.
