Aayush Dave started this petition to UC Berkeley

Recently, UC Berkeley stated that all classes will be Pass/Not Pass by default, but students can request their letter grades by May 3 if they would like for their letter grade to show up on their transcript. While this does help students cope with the stress of learning from home and through video classes, it does not cater to students' needs as well as some other universities' policies in light of the COVID-19 crisis.

While we are better off than with the original grading policy, this new policy does not alleviate all of the potential stress placed on the student body for the following reasons.

1) Decisions about the end of quarantine have placed us in a state of perpetual uncertainty, and therefore, there is a potential for COVID-19 to continue to disrupt student learning during finals week.

2) Other universities such as the University of Texas at Austin, have permitted students to postpone the decision to request a letter grade until a full week after finals. (May 29th)

3) Finals constitute a large percentage of final grades, and making a decision to request a letter grade based on a pre-final exam grade is fallacious since grades could still change significantly.

To allow our peers to choose the classes in which they receive a letter grade after their final exams, to ease the transition to online learning, and to ameliorate this unfortunate situation as best as possible, we should enact this pivot in grading policy.

Let's change this.
