We love Uber, but it’s got to follow London’s rules

We love Uber - its simplicity, its convenience, its prices - and use it in London all the time. But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t follow London’s rules.
On 22 September Transport for London, which regulates minicabs in the city, announced it was not renewing Uber’s licence because of a number of issues that have “potential public safety and security implications.”
These include Uber’s approach to:
- reporting serious criminal offences on its services;
- the way it screens its drivers;
- its software, which could prevent officials like the police from doing their job.
All transport providers in London have to follow these rules. The fact that Uber is a hugely successful company that we all love does not exempt it. This isn’t stifling innovation: it is common sense.
We, the undersigned, call on Uber to quickly engage with Transport for London to ensure its customers and drivers are not deprived of a service that benefits us all.
