Uber Eats are trialling adding calorie counts to their app. We, the undersigned, ask for them to make such information a voluntary addition so people can opt in or out to see it.

Calorie counting is a key factor in many eating disorders, and unlearning that behaviour is key to recovery. Not only that, but ordering a takeaway can in fact be a solace to many who struggle with preparing food or can't eat out. For people with eating disorders or in recovery, having to see a calorie count will be triggering and may stop people being able to order what they wish. Even for people without such mental health issues, everyone should have the right to enjoy food without having to think about restriction or disordered eating patterns! We therefore ask that calorie counts, if added, be an opt-in feature for those that wish to see it, whilst protecting those that, for a variety of reasons, may not be able to.

Mental illnesses and eating disorders are at an all-time high in the UK due to the pandemic, and we ask that the health and wellbeing of those affected please be taken into consideration.
