U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives: Enact Sen. Bills S.50, S. 53 - protecting children and communities from disease clusters

My name is Trevor Schaefer. In 2002, when I was 13 years old, I was diagnosed with a highly malignant form of brain cancer. That same year, where I lived in a small, lakeside town in the mountains of Idaho, at least 4 other cancer cases were diagnosed and reported in young people. In her quest for answers, my mother took this information to the local and state health authorities where she was turned away. They told her our town of 1,700 people was too small to be statistically relevant. We soon learned that this attitude and approach was going on in every part of this great country: children living and dying in small towns too statistically irrelevant to warrant any studies to see if toxins in their neighborhood might be the cause of their illness. Ten years later, we finally have two Senate Bills that address this travesty: S.50, known as Trevor's Law, and S.53. S.50 will: 1) Strengthen federal agency coordination and accountability when investigating potential disease clusters; 2) increase assistance to areas impacted by potential disease clusters; and 3) Authorize federal agencies to form partnerships with states and academic institutions to investigate and help address disease clusters. And S. 53 authorizes technical assistance grants to help people in communities better understand and become more involved with investigation of reported disease clusters.
Now, there are some U.S. Senators who would answer to corporate America instead of to the children whose lives hang in the balance every day when they are diagnosed with cancer. We cannot waste another minute to pass these bills. Please join your voice with ours and sign this petition.
