Why Fast Food Portion Sizes should be Reduced in the United States of America

A common scenario in the U.S. you have had a long day at work and you just need some food and you pull into your local McDonald’s for a quick bite to eat. You go up to the window, order your meal and the worker asks would you like large fries with that. You say yes and without knowing you have let 550 calories into your system and have only paid a dollar for it since its the Friday 1$ deal.(Big Mac®) American Fast food portion sizes in the United States are a major cause of a variety of health issues. Throughout this essay you will learn the negatives of Fast food portion sizes including obesity, mental illness, and diseases.

OBESITY

Fast food proportion sizes effect on the United States of America is grim in a health aspect as it causes obesity. “Studies have shown that this rise of obesity among the world population could be attributed to an increase in calorie intake.” (Mandal) This just shows that massive amounts of adults are contributing to obesity in the U.S.” “39.6 percent of adults and 18.5 percent of children ages 2 to 19 in America have obesity, the State of Obesity report noted that these are the highest rates ever documented.”(Adult Obesity) It is outrageous that such a clear cause to Obesity is at your local fast food restaurant and there is nothing being done to limit the portion size. This is shocking and “More than one-third of U.S. adults are obese frequent fast-food consumption has been shown to contribute to weight gain.”(Products)

    DISEASES

Many diseases are caused by fast food consumption for example “frequently eating high amounts of carbs can lead to repeated spikes in your blood sugar. Over time, these insulin spikes

may cause your body’s normal insulin response to falter. This increases your risk for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and weight gain.”(Healthline) Sodium Intake from fast food “can elevate blood pressure and put stress on your heart and cardiovascular system.” (Healthline) Along with diabetes and putting stress on your heart fast food leads to Ischemic strokes due to the extreme fat and sugars in the products. The negative ramifications of diseases due to fast food are evident and we should no longer let the size of these products stay so big.

MENTAL HEALTH

When many people think of fast food they think of physical health but we need citizens to be informed about the mental effects of fast food. When people are consuming large portions of fast food mental side effects will occur such as “peaks and troughs in blood sugar, with associated periods of hyperactivity and lethargy.” Fast food eaters will also experience “a system in the brain called the reward system. This system was designed to reward the brain when a person is doing things that encourage survival. This includes primal behaviors like eating. The brain knows that when a person eats, they’re doing something right.” As a result of this the brain releases dopamine and gives us a sense of wanting more of whatever caused that dopamine reaction. Fast food portion sizes also lead to depression as “Several studies have found that people who ate a poor-quality diet one that was high in processed meat, chocolates, sweet desserts, fried food, refined cereals and high-fat dairy products were more likely to report symptoms of depression.”

CALL TO ACTION

My call to action to all of you is to sign this petition and bring attention to this matter. The attention brought by this petition will encourage the U.S. to rethink fast food portion sizes and hopefully lead to the senate passing a law restricting the food portion sizes.
