On January 31, 2017, The United States Senate will vote whether or not to approve of Donald Trump's cabinet pick, billionaire Betsy DeVos to be the Secretary of Education. President-elect Trump has made a number of controversial cabinet nominations already - but none seems more inappropriate, or more contrary to reason, than his choice of DeVos to lead the Department of Education.

Ms. DeVos isn’t an educator, or an education leader. She’s not an expert in curriculum or school governance. She is a woman who never went to public school, did not send her children to public school and never worked for public schools. In fact, she has no relevant credentials or experience to hold a job where her primary responsibility would involve setting standards and guiding dollars for the nation’s public schools.

Ms. DeVos is essentially nothing more than a lobbyist — someone who has used her extraordinary wealth to influence the conversation about education reform, and to bend that conversation to her ideological convictions despite the dearth of evidence supporting them.

Ms. Devos also serves on the board of the Acton Institute, which merges corporate interests with dominion theology, or the belief that Christians should take control of political and social institutions.

Our government is supposed to represent the people – and her past actions guided by her own narrow ideology are a clear indication that she shares no common ground with any of the students she would be representing. She has been chosen simply based upon her immense wealth and fiscal loyalty to the Republican Party.

Students of all political affiliations should be outraged at this pick, seeing that all of us will be affected. This petition serves as a presentation of solidarity among students across the nation concerned by the selection of Betsy DeVos to serve as the Secretary of Education. We urge Congress to reject this nomination - we deserve to have our voices heard and respected.
