Over the last weekend of January in 2022, people all over social media have been in an uproar over a tweet by Mercedes Johnson, a recruiter for Honeywell. Mercedes tweeted that a new hire requested and received a salary of $85,000. The problem: the salary would have been offered at $130, shorting the new hire $45,000.
Debates have been raging online on who is to blame, recruiter or new hire. The real culprit is the company that is knowlingly and willingly underpaying employees.
But how to we prevent this moving forward and tighten the wage gap? It’s time to require companies to clearly disclose what their pay range is for a position. Companies already have this data when they post the position, it is time we require them to have transparency and accountability in the hiring arena.
