Kahneef Martin started this petition to U.S. Senate and

My name is Kahneef Martin. I’m a African-American activist and advocate for civil, constitutional, and human rights. I try to involve myself in as many black leadership programs as I possibly can where I am able to offer mentorship to both youth and my peers; informing them of their rights and ways to overcome the inhuman treatment African-Americans are subject to on a daily basis just based on the color of their skin.

Now, there has been a tremendous amount of inequitable murders involving police and African-Americans. Many officers are able to commit an unjust murder without facing any legal trouble, and many officers have. When faced with questioning on why they committed such a heinous act, their response is almost always “I feared for my life”. People question the validity of this cliché due to the fact that most controversial killings of blacks, the suspect is unarmed or have an object in their possession that is incapable of inflicting severe injury to the officer. For instance, on March 1, 2019, police were filmed drawing their firearms on a African-American man holding a bucket and trash grabber. Why officers did not attempt to use weapons that would inflict less lethal results puzzles most people. Officers did not even attempt to utilize the other weapons they had on their belts. However, the most recent attack by police is causing an uproar in Philadelphia. “A police officer in Philadelphia fired his weapon repeatedly at a man while witnesses beg officers to use the tasers they had sitting on their hip” the 31 year old man was holding a box cutter, the man appear to have mental issues. He did not appear to lunge at officers. Nevertheless, When he walked toward officers multiple rounds were fired at the 31 year old striking him, while witnesses watched in horror. Bystanders that knew the 31 year old man tried to intervene and even try to pull the man to safety but officers with their guns drawn order them away. The cries and pleads of the witnesses begging officers not to shoot fell on deaf ears.

I demand we acquire statutes making it unlawful for police officers to willing cause bodily injury and or death to citizens that are both unarmed and does not have anything in their possession that could cause instantaneous death. Such as a firearm. Police can literally say anything is a weapon and get off. It's time to hold the people that swore an oath to protect and uphold the constitution accountable. Police inflict cruel punishments on citizens before they even get a chance to exercise their right to a fair trial.

For consideration:

Any suspect that is not in possession of a visible firearm Will not be subject to deadly force by police. Any “weapon” in a Suspect's possession that is not a firearm and cannot cause immediate harm to officers will not justify a deadly Assault with a firearm. Police must endeavor to utilize less lethal weapons to subdue suspects. such as: Electronic Control Device, Duty Belt Baton, and Pepper Spray. officers who neglect to endeavor utilization of a less deadly weapon and execute savage force with a firearm resulting in persistent vegetative state or demise, then I propose that the officer should receive a compulsory 12-year prison sentence.
