Prevent a Catastrophic War on the Korean Peninsula

A recent Gallup poll found that 58% of Americans support military action against North Korea. This is alarming, and we must do all we can to prevent military conflict on the Korean peninsula.

The South Korean capital city of Seoul lies a mere 35 miles (56 km) south of the DMZ. If war does indeed break out, North Korean military can simply shell the city indiscriminately with artillery. The Seoul metropolitan area is the sixth largest in the world, with a population of over 25 million people. This is not a typo. Within a matter of days, if not hours, an unthinkable number of people would die, even without any deployment of nuclear weapons. And of course, a US attack on North Korea would mean that its masses of ordinary people, whose only crime is living under a dictatorial regime, would die as well. A nuclear confrontation means the effective end of Korea as an entity.

While Kim Jong-un's human rights record is deplorable, a war on the Korean peninsula would result in an even greater loss in lives. As we have seen from the regime changes by force in recent years, a refugee crisis would ensue. Some 70 million people live on the Korean peninsula. It could easily result in a refugee crisis that dwarfs the one currently affecting Europe. Korean War, which took place from 1950 to 1953, claimed a total of five million lives. Again, this is not a typo. Imagine the number of casualties in the year 2017 with the increase in population and advances in weaponry.

The nightmarish scenario does not end here. Most people are well aware that North Korea borders China. And this means that the world's most populous nation and largest military will inevitably get involved. But in addition, North Korea also shares an 11-mile (18-km) border with Russia. A war would almost certainly provoke Russian military action as well. This would mean that five of the world's seven largest militaries would be directly involved in an armed conflict in an area significantly smaller than the state of California. And this is not accounting for the likelihood that Japan would be drawn into it as well. An apocalyptic scenario is not out of the question.

Many people outside of the two Koreas are not aware of the fact that Korea was arbitrarily split in half by the US and the Soviet Union as war booty following World War II, in spite of the fact that Koreans fought on the side of the Allied powers. The people of Korea were punished for fighting on the right side. Amidst the warmongering words between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, we forget that it is the ordinary people of Korea, both North and South, who would once again pay the price.

It is imperative that people around the world prevent this catastrophic scenario. If you reside in the US, in addition to signing this petition, please write your senator and representative, urging them to vote nay to any military action. Threaten them with your voting power. If you don't reside in the US, please sign this petition and pressure the leaders of your respective nation to express unequivocal condemnation of any military action. Thank you.
