Statistics show that 1 out of 8 intoxicated drivers involved in fatal crashes had previous DUI charges and make up roughly 31% of repeat offenders.

These crashes and incidents are 100% preventable but current regulations make it possible for repeat offenses to occur.

Keri's Law, an act relating to penalties for driving under the influence, aims to set a precedent that will largely decrease the amount of repeat offenders and deter future risks. It is a preemptive measure that urges lawmakers to  prosecute these individuals to the full extent of the written law from initial infractions.

The #KeriAnneDeMott Foundation is urging lawmakers to make revisions relating to placement of an ignition interlock device on a vehicle leased or owned and operated by a person convicted of driving under the influence; revising criminal penalties; requiring permanent revocation of the person's driver license under certain circumstances; providing that certain convicted persons are not eligible to plead to a lesser offense and are not eligible for a pretrial diversion program or hearing.

This law is not purely focused on the punishment of individuals that choose to break the law, but rather the safety of unknowing and innocent individuals whose lives are permanently altered due to the selfish and deliberate actions of those who choose to drive while intoxicated. This law aims to promote traffic safety and serve as a basis moving forward across the state of Florida, then eventually to all states to ensure related incidents are handled appropriately..

There are numerous traffic laws currently in place regarding drunk, distracted, and impaired driving and those who choose to participate in these reckless behaviors, behaviors that jeopardize the safety and well being of others should be held accountable and dealt with to the FULL extent of the written law. These incidents are NOT "accidents" but deliberate and selfish decisions and should be treated as such.

Extreme changes and collective effort need to be made in order to expand the safety of drivers and families. Drunk, impaired and distracted driving is NOT a mistake or accident! Do not treat them as such!
