John Zook started this petition to U.S. Senate and

In order to protect and preserve the freedom of speech and expression, as well as other rights labeled in the 1st amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America, we want it to be made known that any regulation or ban of social media, that is not for the protection of the users while using the app, is in fact a breach of the rights of the citizens of the United States who are users of any social media platform. As stated in the first amendment, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances,” (constitution.congress.gov). In order for President Donald J. Trump (or at least congress) to successfully regulate or ban any social media platform, since they are an extension to the people’s ability to use their rights of free speech, religion, press, ability to freely and peaceably assemble virtually, and to even petition their government, Donald J. Trump must create some form of law (whether it is an executive order, a formal law, or mandate) stating that the United States government says that the citizens of the United States cannot use the app as it is. Which, as already discussed breaks and impedes the rights of the 1st amendment, and therefore is an overstepping of powers and therefore in no way cannot become the law or mandate of the land. The goal of this petition is to make this information known and to repeal all regulations that the United States government (specifically the Trump administration) has put in place and to prevent any further regulations on behalf or by the government. In order for any elected official to regulate what can or cannot happen on social media they should and must write to the owners of the social media platform and plead their case on what should change, and then it is up to the owners discretion whether they take the advice of the elected official or not. They must contact them like any other user or citizen because by using their position of power to make things happen and to regulate rights is an abuse of power. We would also like to see that the regulations on Twitter and Facebook (If any) be repealed, and that the app, TikTok, should not be banned, but rather that the United States government should diplomatically contact the owners of the social media platform to negotiate what information from the United States be taken and collected by the app and it’s developers. I want to see that this happens because I know that there are many citizens in this country who enjoy these apps and social media platforms because they are a place where we as people can express ourselves, and I am one of those people. I also realize that these apps take an excessive amount of information from its users and the solution to this should not be that we outright ban these apps, but rather act as the evolved people we are and to have a conversation on the matter and create a solution that benefits everyone involved.
