The anonymity of social media platforms has invited a plethora  of negativity and harassment that has been proven to increase suicide rates, depression, anxiety, and has perpetuated many mental health issues that effect all demographics across the platforms. One way to combat this issue is to require some form of Identification to be attached to your social media account forcing a higher level of accountability for the damaging messages, comments, and general harassment that has run rampant and unchecked across all social media platforms.
It is not about censoring what people say and share on social media but rather forcing a real human being or business to be accountable for what they are saying. In a time where we are highly aware of the negative impacts of cyber bullying and how it has detrimentally impacted not only our youth, but all individuals, businesses, and groups we still lack the ability to hold others accountable for their words and actions on the internet that if said in person would easily be deemed harassment. As social media becomes a more and more foundational aspect of our lives, it’s time for the regulations to meet the societal expectations that we would have if these damaging experiences where said in person.
If platforms such as Venmo and PayPal require identification prior to use, logistically there should be no issues requiring the same for social media platforms. We should not be valuing the accountability of financial transactions over the value of a person’s  mental health and stability.
For the sake of us, for the sake of our children, for the sake of the generations to come, and for the sake of all who have been forced to feel the pain of these experiences, it’s time for a change.
