Sean Lewis started this petition to U.S. Senate and

On Monday, May 25th, George Floyd was murdered by four Minneapolis police officers. Derek Chauvin ruthlessly dug his knee into Floyd’s neck for almost 9 minutes as Floyd begged for mercy saying, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.” The other police officers surrounded him and aided in the killing. This country has now become awake to the unspeakable violence that the police can commit and get away with because the criminal justice system silences people of color. For change to occur, we the people must take action.

What can be changed

Background checks would require officers to publicize their social media and their affiliations with groups outside the police department. Failure to do so would result in denial of the job opportunity, being fired, and/or charges of forgery. Police should be legally obligation to keep their body cameras on and departments, required to release all footage to the public. Finally, all filed complaints should be made public and all departments that do not effectively address legitimate complaints should be defunded.

Please sign this petition to show our representatives and senators that we want specific changes to be made to the law enforcement systems of our country. There are so many ways we can make changes to the police department on the national level and it starts with you!
