Gun Control: Psychological Evaluations

I am a student at UNC-Charlotte and I was in the classroom where the shooting occurred on April 30, 2019. I was lucky to have escaped the classroom unharmed but six of my classmates were not as lucky. It was just a week later when I heard about the shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch. Something must be done to stop these attacks that take lives and take the sense of safety away from thousands more.

I recognize the challenges present in gun reform and I feel that we must take small steps forward and do so consistently if we want to see a change. I know it would be nearly impossible to take the guns out of the hands of all American citizens. Most gun owners have no intentions of using their firearms in harmful ways, but there must be a way to keep these weapons out of the hands of people who do.

I looked into the eyes of the shooter that day and what I saw was terrifying. I saw a man with no emotion and no empathy. He was killing innocent people and his face showed no expression. I feel that a psychological assessment of this person could have revealed his troubles and could have revealed that he was unfit to carry a gun. I propose that we establish a mental health assessment that must be completed in order to purchase a firearm. We also must institute regular mental health checks for those who plan to continue to carry firearms.

Please sign this petition and share it with as many as you can. This is a small step forward that can bring about a big change. We hear about mass shootings too often and we need to act now and continue to act if we want them to stop.
